Jonathan Crane was born with three things: a small fortune, a dizzying intellect, and the inability to feel fear. The ambulance rushing Crane’s parents to the hospital on the night of his birth was in a crash, which killed his father and one of paramedics aboard. His mother, with the assistance of the second paramedics, was able to cling to life long enough to give birth to a perfectly healthy baby boy. The insurance policy that his parents had, along with the sale of their family owned business, ensured that Jonathan would never go without as long as his money was managed properly.

Raised by an aunt and uncle in Gotham, Jonathan excelled in his studies but often got in trouble for needlessly dangerous pranks and stunts. It wasn’t until his teenage years when the family found out that Jonathan wasn’t capable of experiencing fear. The boy visited some best doctors and many tests were run but no one could find the cause of his condition. Meanwhile Jonathan continued to chase the feeling of fear, never to find it.

He graduated high school early and at the top of his class and went to Gotham University at the age of 16 to study the human brain and cure his own condition all the while continuing to needlessly risk his life. He spent is weekends and free time participating in extreme sports like cliff jumping, base jumping, and parkour. Dissatisfied with school and feeling he was beyond his professors in every way Jonathan left after only 2 years of study to pursue his own interests. He invested large sums of his own money into personal research in the areas of psychology, neurology, and engineering and is currently one of the world’s leading expert on the subject of fear…though his expertise is known only to him.

For the last year Jonathan has spent time with Haly’s Circus as a stunt rider and has a personal best record of 15 busses (and one shark). Once the stories of the Superman in Metropolis, the Bat-Man in Gotham, and the news stories regarding Wonder Woman Jonathan got the idea to “join the club”. Using his knowledge of the sciences and engineering he constructed a suit and some personal gadgets, including his fear toxin, to help him in his quest to fight crime as Phobos. At first he did it to seek thrills but over the last few months he’s come to love the good he is doing in the world and taken what was originally another quest for fear and turned it into a near full time passion.
